IBC Debate: Opening Round by SM103 Students

debate.jpg

Students of the course, SM103 Life, Health and Nutrition, formed four teams to debate on the motions:

  1. Motion I on 'Traditional Medicine is better than western/modern medicine' - Xuenzhang team proposed and Sariputra Team opposed the motion ; and
Motion II on 'My health is the fruit of my past karma, and I cannot do anything about it' - Nagarjuna Team proposed and Buddhaghosa Team opposed the motion.

For the round conducted on February 15, 2009, Team Sariputra and Team Buddhaghosa won in points. In reality, no one lost, everybody gained from their debates. The debaters learned a lot and we the audience also learned much from them. The debates had been very informative (tremendous amount of research conducted by the students in their preparation for the debate motions) and eye-opening, and most entertaining, hilarious at some points. Great performance.

Thank you debaters, trainers and coaches and the adjudicators.

Coming up next:
Motion III: Meditating monks and nuns are more effective than socially engaging monks and nuns in promoting Buddha Sasana. (Buddhaghosa vs Sariputra)

Motion IV. Mental health is more important than physical health. (Xuenzhang vs Nagarjuna)

Let me remind you about other causes and conditions that determine health, eg biological, physical, etc; and the Law of Dependent Origination, Conditional Relations, etc

Holistic living is certainly preferable to having your body cut up and pieced together again with bits and pieces of 'foreign bodies'

We don't believe in determinism. What's the point of living if nothing can be changed!!!

We can't change the past. We are mentally unhealthy when we are angry. When we got angry, we sowed a seed of anger, that seed would be there for all times, waiting to fruit. That seed, my friends, was sown; could you 'undo the sowing' so that the 'seed was not there'?
