AA403 - Buddhist Arts and Architecture: South East Asia

A study of Buddhist art and architecture in Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam in a historical and functional perspective. The study will take into consideration the following four phase in the development of South East Asian art and architecture: a) pre-Buddhist indigenous art-styles of each country in the region, b) assimilation of the indigenous with the Indian Buddhist art-styles following the introduction of Buddhism, c) transition from the preceding stage to the development of an indigenous style, d) development of a full fledged indigenous tradition of Buddhist art and architecture. The influence of the Mahāyāna form of Buddhism on South East Asian Buddhist art, relationship between regional traditions, iconography, econometry and technology, stylistic developments, classification and periodization will also form an integral part of this study.
