Prof. Dr. Tilak Kariyawasam

Prof. Dr.Tilak Kariyawasam – Professor Emeritus- First graduated (B.A., First Class Hons) from Vidyodaya University (Present: Sri Jayewardanepure University), Sri Lanka, in 1967, and was appointed lecturer to the same University in 1968. Engaged in postgraduate research work at the University of Lancaster, U.K. (1970-1973), and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D. 1974) and was subsequently appointed to the University of Kelaniya (1975). Obtained a Commonwealth Fellowship to University of Lancaster,U.K. (1984-85).

Appointed as the Head of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies (1988-1997) and as the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (1998-2003). Appointed as a Senior Professor of Buddhist Studies- Chair (2005-2008). Received the Vice-Chancellor’s award for completing 40 years of University Service on the 01-01-2008. Retired from the Post of Senior Chair Professor on the 30.09.2008. Received the Conferment of the Title “Professor Emeritus”, University of Kelaniya (2012).

Currently serves as a Professor of Buddhist Studies and the Dean of the Graduate School, International Buddhist College, Thailand (from July of 2009). Specialized in Buddhologyin Theravāda and Mahāyāna, reading major Pali and Sanskrit texts, teaching subjects covering Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture, Pali and Theravāda Buddhism.
